Freestanding heat
Stoves
A stove sits in the room instead of in the wall, which is why it heats better than almost anything else. Wood or gas, cast iron or steel.

What people buy
Three kinds, and they suit different houses.
Sizing matters more here than anywhere else in the store. An oversized stove gets run choked down, which is bad for the stove and bad for the glass.
Steel
Heats the room fastest of the three. Lighter, usually cheaper, and the one that suits a casita or a room you want warm quickly.
Cast iron
Heats up fast, looks the part, and takes a beating. The classic answer if you want fire you can see and heat you can feel.
Gas
A stove body with a gas burner inside. All of the look, none of the hauling, and it lights from a remote.
Sizing
Tell us the square footage and how open the floor plan is.
A stove rated for 2,000 square feet in a magazine is rated for a tight house in a cold climate. What matters here is your room, your ceiling height, and how much of the house you actually want it to reach.
Come in with a rough floor plan sketch. Five minutes at the counter will save you from buying too much stove.

Straight answers
Before you buy
Cast iron or steel?
Steel warms the room quicker. Cast iron takes longer to come up and then holds the heat for longer after the fire dies down. Neither is better. It depends whether you want heat fast or heat steady.
Can a stove be my only heat?
For one room or a casita, easily. For a whole house it depends on the layout. We will tell you straight if you are asking too much of one appliance.
